Mostly 35mm film, though some now-defunct programs were shot on Super-16mm, like the great Homicide and the locally-produced Walker, Tx Ranger...

I wonder if any current programs are shot on S16mm?

Most major prime time episodic shows and movie made for TV are shot just like a movie. Arri or Panavs 35mm, S16 ofr less popular ones. Stocks also vary like regular films with certain stocks being more popular with others. Usually if certain shows are being produced by the same production house you will get the same camera, lenses and sometimes stock since they can get it cheaper in bulk with Kodak/Fuji.

Friends and a lot of NBC's comedy sitcom are shot with Kodak's Vision 500T.

X-Files are Arri (sometimes Pana) cam and Vision Stocks
ER in Panav and Vision Stocks

Boston Public
The Practice (all three are produced by Kelly)

There is a growing number of HD users, mostly new shows, Bernie Mac Show, Reba, Titus, 100 Centre Street, Earth: Final Conflict and Witchblade being the highest profile.

However, the use of HD IMHO is PBS docs- some Nova and American Experience pieces use HD like nobody else, including features shot in HD. It seems they have created a lighting scheme that is meant for HD - unlike film or video.

And ofcourse there is still Video - Mostly in Ikegamis, Hitachis, Thompsons, RCA, etc. They are not tape based. Video is in used news, late shows, soaps, and etc.

In Germany, most "TV Films" are shot on 16mm or S16. And occasionally on HDCAM from Sony.
Very little 35mm as far as I know.

Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, and the first season (and maybe the second, I can't remember now) were shot on 16mm (not Super 16).
Also, Indiana Jones Cronicles was shot on either 16mm or S16. I'm pretty sure regular 16mm.

the old 70's, The Mary Tyler Moore Show was, if i'm not mistaken, shot on 16mm with Ektacrome! Seinfeld was shot on 35mm with the now to rest Agfa, maybe even later shows were on a Kodak stock.

Young Indiana Jones was shot in super 16 although not broadcast letterboxed so the audience really only saw the regular 16 image.
1st season of Buffy was also 16/S16 and then swiched to 35. Side by side the biggest difference seamed t obe in skin tones , but that seems odd to me since that would be a colourist job.
BTW, has anyone seen the trailer for Star Wars Episode II on the big screen? I was expecting to not like the images, but I really couldn't tell a big difference.

Yes, it is my understanding from an old article that they wanted a wider image to allow for repositioning for effects. The end result was cropped as standard 16mm. Looked really good.

I haven't seen it yet, but I would expect you WOULDN'T see any difference, because Lucas has a literal army of programmers writing proprietary code to make Digital look like film, which is, and probably will always be far beyond the price range of anyone else. (Not that he would sell it anyway.)

That's been my argument all along against anyone using Lucas and Star Wars episode whatever, as some film-vs-digital comparison benchmark to prove that it's a good idea to start shooting digital, particularly mini-DV or the other lesser formats.

It's like us arguing the viability of Super 8 film with someone, by using films shot on 65mm film for evidence.

Nobody else shooting in digital format is going to be able to get the look that he will because of his unique MCOHA situation (money coming out his ass).
